A Christmas Story Christmas was a pleasant discovery on HBO Max. A sequel to the 1980s classic that is equally as captivating and enjoyable as the original.
Who didn’t enjoy the escapades of Ralphie Parker and his adventures around the neighborhood? Well, now you can enjoy his entire family’s mischief as they celebrate Christmas for the first time in a long time.
Remember Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) from A Christmas Story, the unfortunate story about the young boy who wants a BB gun for Christmas?
Fast forward almost 40 years, and Ralphie is a grown man in the 1970s with a young family. Ralphie is chasing his dream of becoming a writer, but tragedy strikes as his father passes away just a few days before Christmas.
Ralphie travels home with his family and reconnects with his Mom and the small town he left many years prior to chase his dreams.
Directed by Clay Kaytis, A Christmas Story Christmas is as fun as the original. This is a charming story about a young man who travels home and rediscovers the joys of his past.
When you watch a sequel of a great film, you watch with trepidation, as you wonder will it bring the same sense of enjoyment as the original. With A Christmas Story Christmas, there is something about this film that brings the same sense of fun.
A Christmas Story recreated the sense of childhood fun and successfully replicated life in 1940s America with the sets and costumes and the characters’ honesty.
So watching A Christmas Story Christmas, you hope for the same experience, and it is there. Set in the 1970s, no detail has been spared, and there is something about both these films that captures America’s life in a bygone era.
Written by Peter Billingsley, A Christmas Story Christmas is crafted with the same feeling, but this time as an adult who is lost in the world and returns home only to rekindle his friendship with his childhood friends. Also, through the grieving process, he discovers his father’s kindness and love for him, which was largely unrecognized.
Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker is perfect. He was brilliant as the young Ralphie Parker, who wanted a BB gun for Christmas. Now, as a man in his 40s struggling to find his footing as a writer, Peter’s portrayal of a struggling writer is as good as his performance almost 40 years earlier.
Julie Hagerty as Mrs. Parker is a lovely surprise. She is quirky and fun and perfectly plays Ralphie’s Mom.
This time of year, all the streaming platforms are flooded with holiday-themed films, so there is a film for every type of person.
If you are a person who loves a well-crafted film that you could watch with your entire family, but also a film that will help you reminisce about the past. A Christmas Story Christmas is a film that will get you into the Christmas spirit.
