The 2020 Tony Awards like everything else in this year are slightly different than normal.

As we know the Broadway world came screeching to a halt on March 12th, but the nomination process for the Tony Awards had already commenced.

2020 promised 28 new productions to hit the Great White Way, but thanks to Covid-19, that number was reduced down to 18 with 4 musicals and 4 revivals.

Like everything else the 2020 Tony Awards are going to be different.

The Broadway League and American Theater Wing both determined that the cut off dates for nominations would be February 19 2020, as some productions had begun previews or opened. But here is the hitch, some of the nominators and voters may not have seen the productions to cast their vote for this year before Broadway closed.

The nominations, as listed below, have some noticeable abnormalities.

Firstly the nominees for Best Original Score, usually dominated by musicals, does not feature a single musical. In fact all the nominees for 2020 are scores written for plays. This is the first time in the ceremony’s history that no musical has been nominated in this category.

Aaron Tveit is the sole nominee for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. But that doesn’t mean he automatically wins. He needs to gain over 60% of the votes to win the category. The producers of Moulin Rouge! better have a good campaign to help him get the votes he needs to clinch the award.

Interestingly there is no nominees for Revivals of a Musical as no revivals opened before the cut off date or before the pandemic closure in March as both Company and Carline in Charge were set to open in the Spring of 2020.

The 74th annual ceremony honors a Broadway season cut short, but there are still a number of nominees that rightly deserve their award due to some spectacular work on amazing productions that only got to shine for a smaller amount of time.

No date has been set for streaming the awards ceremony virtually.
