My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix

My Best Friend’s Exorcism is not for the faint-hearted! Abby and Gretchen, long-standing best friends, have a difficult start to high school when Gretchen starts to act strange.

Abby is the only one who can help, but trying to figure out exactly how is a messy (and I mean literally!) task.

Abby’s journey should be familiar to fans of series like Stranger Things; it’s a classic story about a kid facing up to unspeakable evil with no help or comfort from the clueless adults around her.

Having said that, while the late ’80s vibes feel natural and are very appealing to fans of Stranger Things, it’s much darker and viscerally disgusting at times, with bodily fluids galore.

Similar to Stephen King in his Carrie era. Only grosser.

Possession isn’t a tidy thing, and Hendrix isn’t afraid of delving into the truly disgusting parts of being in a human body.

The voice acting on Audible is great, and the narration feels atmospheric and spooky without being too intrusive. I’d recommend it for classic horror fans.

From the Oasthouse by Alan Partridge (aka Steve Coogan)

This Audible Original is only going to work for you if you already know and love Alan Partridge!

From the Oasthouse is an excellent foray into Alan’s life.

Alan is quieter and more reflective; he seeks to think about his life and the wider issues facing the modern world in a series of podcasts.

The result is funny, awkward, and endearing: everything you’d expect from Coogan as Partridge. He embodies Alan as naturally as ever, narrating Alan’s inner monologue with deadpan humour.

For long-time fans, this is a must-listen, and the new series is set to include familiar characters that fans will be excited to hear.

If you enjoyed I, Partridge, and Nomad, the Alan Partridge audiobooks, you’ll love this, too. I’d say there are fewer laugh-out-loud moments here, but it’s still full of brilliantly awkward, un-self-aware moments, and it’s familiar and comforting while offering a slightly different perspective on Alan himself.

Plus, as a bonus treat: it has the best theme tune imaginable. It’s a genuine treat to hear it in every episode.

The Miranda Obsession by Jen Silverman

The Miranda Obsession is narrated by Rachel Brosnahan, an actress known primarily for her role in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. She narrates this story incredibly well, bringing the words to life in a way that makes it difficult to stop listening. It also includes voice acting from Josh Groban, Morgan Spector, and more.

Set in the 1980s, this is a luxurious, sumptuous trip to the past: think penthouses, money, power, rock stars, and a lot of drama.

Miranda inhabits this world with uncanny power and ease; rich and powerful men call her time and time again, confiding in her their deepest and most intimate secrets.

As Miranda learns more about these men, her power begins to grow. But who is Miranda, and what is she going to do with this precious insider knowledge? After all, she has the power to tear down some extremely powerful men.

It’s genuinely hard to stop listening to this one. It’s the kind of story that offers perfect escapism and an excellent balance of humour, tenderness, and plot twists. It’s genuinely gripping, and it’s interesting to see these traditionally strong and powerful men reveal themselves to be, well, human.

I’d recommend listening to this during a regular task that you don’t like doing (exercise, cleaning). It will make you actively want to do that dreaded ‘thing.’ And that is definitely not the case for all audiobooks!

Impact Winter by Travis Beacham

If you love post-apocalyptic dramas, this Audible Original is for you. Impact Winter is a rollercoaster of a tale, with a full cast of excellent voice actors keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout.

This is made by the producers of The Walking Dead and the writer of Pacific Rim, and it has a similar vibe: it’s tense, with non-stop action, and involves a group of survivors clinging onto life in the aftermath of a comet blotting out the sun.

As if that wasn’t hard enough, there are also vampires. So that’s another factor.

I’d recommend this Audible audiobook to you if you want to get invested in characters as they band together for survival. The characters of Darcy and Hope are compelling, and the incredible audio makes it a thrill to listen to.

I would say that, like My Best Friend’s Exorcism, I wouldn’t recommend listening to this around little ones. It has some tense, violent, and very sad moments, so it’s a good one to enjoy with headphones in!

The Rebound by Leeanne Slade

If you prefer a more lighthearted listen, The Rebound is one of the best Audible Originals to choose. A genuinely funny romcom, this is narrated by Claudia Jessie, who does a great job of being engaging without being too intrusive – the holy grail of audiobook narration!

The story follows Kitty, pursuing her career and ignoring the fact that her relationship with her boyfriend, Archie, is becoming a bit too comfortable.

When Archie proposes to Kitty, she surprises herself by not wanting to get married; not wanting to lose him, she asks him for some time to talk herself into it.

Unfortunately, not all goes smoothly, and this is apparent as soon as the character of Leo enters the scene.

It’s a classic love triangle story, with imperfect (but still loveable) characters, and it’s surprisingly raw and tender, with some genuinely relatable, human moments between the three of them.

This is a different kind of listen for me, but I would recommend it for anyone wanting to escape into human drama for a little while. Plus, it’s very witty, which is a nice bonus. A really good read if you need a bit of a comfort listen.

Just One Damned Thing After Another by Marty Ross

Narrated by the excellent cast of Gemma Whelan, Ben Miles, Jonathan Bailey, and Zara Ramm, this Audible Original is a drama based on the original books by Jodi Taylor.

This Audible play is gripping, and the voice acting really helps to bring the characters to life.

It has a slow-ish start but soon sucks you in! It follows Max, an ancient history graduate, in her new job at St Mary’s Historical Research Institute. But before long, Max is plunged into a mad world where history actually comes to life.

Part entertainment, part educational, this is an excellent way to enjoy history while also appreciating some human drama along the way.

I enjoyed this one; it’s quite different from books I usually listen to, and the format does feel very different (this is technically a play, rather than an audiobook). I think it’s a great bit of escapism, and a fun listen to spend an Audible credit on.

The Nox by Joe White & Catriona Ward

Another thrilling end-of-the-world drama, this story is narrated by a full cast of voice actors who do an excellent job. This, along with the music, makes it a very atmospheric listen, one that you can get lost in with a decent pair of headphones.

The Nox follows the crew of, well, The Nox, a research vessel searching for the last remaining polar bears in an almost-destroyed Earth.

However, suffocated by the isolation of their voyage, they learn that there’s something else going on, and paranoia quickly kicks in.

Once things start going wrong and the crew is fighting for survival, it becomes truly unputdownable (or maybe, unpausable?).

It’s emotional and an absolute rollercoaster. If you love a plot-driven book, this is a must-listen. Even if you don’t usually enjoy sci-fi, I think you’ll enjoy the deeply layered human drama here.

Stephen Fry’s Victorian Secrets

In this Audible podcast, Stephen Fry shares his knowledge of the Victorian era, digging into the scandalous, the disgusting, and the bizarre.

Victorian Secrets uncovers some aspects of the time period that you definitely didn’t learn about at school: from pornography to the underground to the real experiences of Black Victorians in Britain, this is a fascinating deep dive, and Stephen Fry is articulate, witty, and smart (as usual)!

In Victorian Secrets, listeners will learn about the Victorians in a way that makes them feel more human, somehow, than the textbooks I remember reading at school.

The episode ‘Beauty and the Beards’, for example, dive into beauty standards of the period, uncovering some truly interesting tidbits about the impossible standards women have been chasing for the longest time.

Fans of Stephen Fry will really enjoy this, and I like having it on while I’m pottering around the house. I would say that the piano music is slightly distracting: if I had it my way, I’d tone it down a little.

Still, it’s an interesting listen and will make you feel super smart. And it will give you an array of interesting facts to surprise your friends with.

Titting About by French and Saunders

As you might be able to tell by the title, this is another podcast that you might not want to listen to with little ones around!

French and Saunders have an electric partnership, and that continues to this day. Titting About allows Dawn and Jennifer to be as naughty and silly as they always are when they get together, and this Audible podcast is a must-listen for fans.

Each episode loosely follows a theme – for example, topics like ‘Embarrassment’, ‘Showbiz’, and ‘Paranormal.’ These serve as a jumping-off point for a meandering and hilarious conversation in which French and Saunders recount some of the funniest and most embarrassing moments of their lives with refreshing honesty.

There are four seasons of this Audible podcast to enjoy (so far!) and the last episode, ‘Decades’, is particularly heartwarming, as the pair look back on every decade of their lives so far. It’s hilarious and very sweet.

If you want to laugh out loud, I’d absolutely recommend giving this podcast a try. There’s something cosy and comforting about listening to long-time best friends swap secrets and stories, and this is no exception.

You can tell that they adore each other in the way that old friends do, and that’s really heartwarming and enjoyable to listen to.

Moriarty: The Devil’s Game by Charles Kindinger

Starring Dominic Monaghan (Lost, Lord of the Rings) and a full cast of actors, Moriarty: The Devil’s Game is an intriguing new entry to the Sherlock universe.

This story poses the question: what if Moriarty was not an evil genius, but was, in fact, completely innocent? What if he was framed, and what if he was fighting for his life (and reputation)?

Moriarty traverses the underworld of London, battling against Sherlock Holmes, with their ongoing feud escalating massively.

It’s a rollercoaster ride full of a million twists and turns. If you like guessing what’s about to happen, and hunting around for clues while you listen, this is an excellent choice.

I will say that this isn’t particularly loyal to the source material – Holmes is not the loveable rogue we’re used to, but is quite different from Moriarty’s perspective. This may be a bit of an adjustment for long-standing fans of Arthur Conan Doyle.

I would recommend this if you love the setting and characters of the Sherlock Holmes universe and you love a story full of twists and cliffhangers. It’s a really fun listen if you can let go of the original stories while you listen.

Plus, it also stars Billy Boyd, which means the Hobbit best pals are reunited, which, as a Lord of the Rings fan, I love to see!

The Seventh Victim by Michael Wood

The Seventh Victim is a good crime thriller, the kind of thing that will keep you awake at night as you turn over the suspects in your mind. With excellent narration, this is a great option for true crime enthusiasts wanting a fictional escape.

This story follows Diane Marshall, almost twenty-five years after her son Zachery disappeared. When the man convicted of killing thirteen boys, including her own son, confesses to the murders, Diane is perplexed when he doesn’t confess to killing Zachery.

SO what happened to him?

It’s obviously terribly sad, but thrilling, and it’s excellent if you like a story with a lot of twists and turns.
